Curt Schilling Should Enter HOF as a Diamondback
With the announcement of his retirement on Monday, Curt Schilling sparked a firestorm of debate over his worthiness to be enshrined in Cooperstown. Let’s assume for a moment that he’s Hall of Fame material and consider whose cap he ought to wear on his plaque. Schilling’s ML career spanned 20 seasons with five clubs, so there are multiple contenders for the honor. Here at Diamondbacks Nation, we are firmly resolved that Schilling should be the first player inducted into the pantheon as a member of the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Have Gun, Will Travel (1988 to 1991). Originally drafted by the Red Sox, Schilling was dealt to the Orioles in July 1988 and made his first ML appearance with Baltimore that September. After a handful of starts over three seasons, the hard-throwing right-hander was shipped to Houston, where he pitched exclusively from the pen. Diamondbacks Notes: August 16, 2008
* ARI @ HOU, GAME 1 -- The Diamondbacks crossed the plate early and often, cruising to a 12-2 win over Houston in Friday's series opener. Astros' lefty starter Wandy Rodriguez issued five walks and Arizona batted around in the top of the first inning. But the visitors scored only three runs in that frame, as Chris Burke and Brandon Webb both took called third strikes with the bases loaded. Webb would need no more support, his Cy Young form evidenced by a line of 8 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, BB, 6 K on 82 pitches. His teammates took no chances and scored in all but two innings. Every starting position player notched a hit and reached home safely at least once on the night. In short, this was a laugher.
* ARI @ HOU, GAME 2 -- By a score only a litte less one-sided than Friday's final, Arizona gave Houston a case of déjà vu and defeated the hosts 11-5 on Saturday. The winning formula was eerily familiar -- a crooked number in the top of the first, a dominant pitching peformance, and...

Series Preview: Diamondbacks @ Astros
* PREVIEW: ARI @ HOU -- This evening, Arizona opens a three-game road series against the Astros, who roll into the weekend having won seven games in a row. Wins are wins, but the streak is less impressive considering it came in consecutive series sweeps against the Reds (53-68) and Giants (50-70). Our boys should put up more of a fight than those Sisters of the Poor, especially with Brandon Webb and Randy Johnson expected to take the mound in the series. In their meeting at Chase Field from April 28-30, the Diamondbacks took two of three from Houston.
* MATH CLASS -- The Astros have the same record as Arizona at 62-59, but they have been outscored 555-576 on the season. based on the Pythagorean expectation formula developed by Bill James to translate run differential into wins and losses, the 'Stros should be 58-63 on the year. With 549 runs scored to 526 runs allowed, the Diamondbacks project to a record of 63-58. Fans will remember that Arizona won the NL West last year...
